Studio Project

Architecture and the imaginary of the electric city share a relationship shaped by technological advances, aspirations for urbanity, and cultural representations of the future. Since the emergence of electricity as the driving force of modernity, the city has transformed into a landscape where artificial light and production and distribution infrastructures are redrawing the contours of urban space.

The electrification of cities marked a decisive turning point. With public lighting, building facades came alive, days extended into the night, and spaces opened up to new social dynamics. The illuminated skyscrapers of New York, the neon signs of Tokyo, and the light installations of Paris all contribute to an imaginary world where electricity is synonymous with speed, spectacle, and modernity.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the electric city also raises ecological and social questions, such as energy and its environmental impact, while new approaches attempt to reconcile this technological vision with increased ecological responsibility, oscillating between futuristic utopia and ecological awareness.

Our teaching philosophy is one of emancipation more than just transmission. Throught testing via model-making, the workshop will demand from the students a sense of autonomy, a taste for experimentation and practical research in the fields of re-use of materials, found objects, subtle assemblages, and uncommon aesthetics related to the typology of the canopy.

Muoto is an architectural office based in Paris since 2003. Its activities cover the fields of architecture, urban planning, design, teaching, and scientific research. Muoto’s work features minimal structures that can combine different activities, evolve in time, and merge economical and aesthetic issues. Muoto means form in Finnish.

Internships

Students accepted into the Muoto Studio at Venice Studio may be considered for available internship or job opportunities at Muoto. Selection of candidates is at the sole discretion of the studio directors and Muoto. Places are not guaranteed.
